This study sets out to investigate the historical dialogue between North and South Korea since the latter part of the 1980s within the Beginning, Formation of Foundation, and Stagnant periods. It also proposes suggestions, based on these periods, to resume the historical dialogue between the two Koreas. Popular groups of historical studies emerged after the democratization movement of 1987 in South Korean society, which led to gradual preparations for historical dialogue between North and South Korea. The inter-Korean summit of 2000 was a decisive turning point in reviving historical dialogue between the two Koreas. There is now more active historical dialogue, which that resulted from the excavation of ancient fields and cultural assets, common interest in issues with Japan in the past, and broad consensus.
Now is the time to reexamine the topics discussed so far and closely examine differences in practical perceptions of historical facts between North and South Korea, based on past outcomes. Furthermore, there is a need to explore and discuss universal values of mankind that the two Koreas can pursue together. A good example can be found in a pursuit of integrated historical awareness, based on the values of peace and postcolonialism. It is also important for the two Koreas to prepare plans to minimize adverse public perception to political changes. North and South Korea must explore practical measures for their citizens to recognize and understand each other's history and historical awareness. One such measure is to explore alternative descriptions of history by comparing historical figures and textbooks between North and South Korea and by teaching historical materials between the two Koreas and Korean ethnic schools in Japan. Such specific mutual understanding will be the most realistic approach to resume historical dialogue and prepare for the future of integrated historical awareness between North and South Korea.
