This paper aims to introduce westerners who lived in Incheon, an open port, in the late 19th and early 20 centuries and wrote Korean-related books, and to identify the characteristics of their books.
Scott came to Incheon prior to Christian missionaries and lived as a diplomat, knowing that westerners would rush in through Incheon in the near future, and that the first thing they needed was to learn Korean. He wrote Korean grammar books and dictionaries using printing equipment installed on naval vessels anchored at Incheon Port, which greatly helped early Westerners learn Korean.
When Methodist chose Incheon as the base of missionary work, Mr.&Mrs. Jones, Methodist missionaries, lived in Incheon, especially for elementary school education for women and young children, and wrote books in Korean script and used them as textbooks.
While Methodists established Yongwha school in Incheon and focused on educational missions, the Anglican Church established a Luke Hospital in Incheon and devoted itself to medical missions. The Korean phrase book, written by Pastor Carden of the Anglican Church, contains daily conversation required for smooth communication with residents. For this reason, many concepts and astronomical and geographical expressions around Incheon applied in his phrases.
Incheon Port was not only a gateway to Westerners, but also a place where Westerners settled down and actively interacted with local residents.
