The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a ‘Life Tasks Scale for College Students’ based on five life tasks(occupation, friendship, love, self-direction, spirituality) of the Individual Psychology by Adler. For the purpose, first, the concept of five life tasks and sub-factors were defined with the consultation of Adler Individual Psychology experts, based on the literature of Adler Individual Psychology. The first preparatory scale was developed through open-ended questionnaire with college students. The second preparatory scale was developed based on the first and second evaluations by Adler Individual Psychology experts, and revision of the Likert type response of the preparatory scale items with college students. The final items were selected and analyzed through preliminary study and main study. The results are as follows: first, ‘Life Tasks Scale for College Students' was composed of five factors (occupation, friendship, love, self-direction, spirituality), consisting 17 sub-factors and a total of 51 items. Second, the results of confirmatory factor analysis to examine the construct validity of this scale showed that the main factors and sub-factor structures were appropriate. Third, the results of the correlation analysis to examine the concurrent validity showed that this scale had significantly positive correlations with the previous Life Tasks Scale and the Social Interest Scale. Fourth, the results of the correlation analysis to examine the criterion validity showed that this scale had significantly positive correlations with the Social Interest Scale and the Life Satisfaction Scale and the College Life Adaption Scale. Fifth, the results of the stepwise and hierarchical multiple regression analysis to examine the incremental validity showed that this scale had a greater explanatory power on the social interest of the college students than the previous Life Tasks Scale. This study has a significance in that it developed a scale to measure life tasks of college students in accordance with the social culture of Korea, based on the Individual Psychology theory. This scale could be used as a useful tool to measure the life tasks for colleges students and evaluate the effectiveness of education and counseling programs to improve their performance level of life tasks.
