This thesis carried out a comparative review of magazine Space and Quarterly Art from 1978 to 1983. This was a time when the art market was formed and private capital established media, contests, and art galleries, changing the art system. This thesis focused on the art historical transformation of art field, where magazine Quarterly Art entered into art journalism in which only ‘Space’ had authority and new painters took positions. Through this comparative research, it was revealed that the character of publisher, the nature of the articles and the painters exposed on the pages and the tendency of the reported exhibitions differed from each other. Space was related to the Central Intelligence Agency and the government’s construction enterprise. Space targeted experts as its readers and revealed elitism in critical discourse. Space supported painters of abstract modernism and hyperrealism. On the other hand, Quarterly Art was a magazine established by private capital while establishing its own art system in artistic field. Quarterly Art targeted popular art lovers as readers and favored a wide range of figurative painters. Since 1980, Quarterly Art has published anti-modernist discourse and supported artists such as ‘Reality and Speech’, ‘Limsulnyeon’, and Shin Hak-cheol registering the position of artists of new figurative painting, which was distinguished from abstract modernism and hyperrealism within the artistic field.
