Lee Ungno (李應魯, 1904~1989), who got involved in the East Berlin-North Korean Spy Ring Incident, was summoned to Korea in 1967 and created approximately 300 artworks during his 1 year and 8 months of imprisonment. It was tacit taboo of mentioning his name in the Korean art community due to the escalated ideological confrontation and political dishonor even after his release and this acted as a hindrance toward examining his confinement artworks from art history perspective. In this light, this study aimed to shed light on the aspects of his confinement artworks by understanding accurate channels and periods of prison transfer after looking into his inmate identification which is kept at the National Archives of Korea.
The scope of study was limited to the works created at the Seoul detention center, the Daejeon Penitentiary, and the Anyang Penitentiary and the steps taken afterward. Also, the works have been compared based on respective locations. First of all, while being confined at the Seoul detention center, he made formative attempts using materials which he could obtain easily in daily life. Creating artworks at penitentiary, a unique environment, made them stand out but it was possible owing to his experiences accumulated since young and experimental mindset. He was transferred to the Daejeon Penitentiary after the July 1968 appellate court verdict and created the highest number of artworks in a stable environment equipped with Art tools. Most works, in terms of contents, mainly focused on abstraction of letters, similar to the ones created in Europe, whereas surface was more exaggerated than line and stroke in terms of format. Such an expression is regarded as the transitional stage to abstraction of letters during which composition was emphasized in the 1970s. Lastly, during the shortest confinement at the Anyang Penitentiary, he created self-portrait series focusing on internal emotions. While maintaining close relations with overseas art communities during preparation to return to domestic art community, he aspired to expand the horizon of his art world abroad by holding private exhibitions in Switzerland, Paris, and so on.
Based on perceiving Lee Ungno’s attitude of not being discouraged by confinement and using it as another space for artwork creation and looking into his blank artwork creation period, this study can be a bridgehead of understanding his artwork trends which underwent transformation while shifting from the 1960s to the 1970s.
