This article is to argue that the distinction between syntactic and asyntactic compounds has nothing to do with understanding the nature of compound words, and that it is not possible to classify them clearly. The evidences are as follows.
Firstly, syntactic and asyntactic compound words have not been treated as the main types of compound words, except for Bloomfield(1933). Secondly, phrasal compounds, which have been regarded as synonyms for syntactic compounds, are used to refer to words with a phrase in non-head position, in recent papers on word formation. Thirdly, the interpretation of "syntactic" is so various that classification of compounds could be quite different, depending on which interpretation you choose. Moreover, none of the various meanings can be proven wrong. Fourthly, the phrasal structure could also be used as an analogical schema in forming compounds. Therefore, even though the internal structure of a compound word is the same as the that of phrase, it cannot be guaranteed that the word was formed in syntax component, not by morphological process.
