Daegu Metropolitan City has a relatively simple topography, including considerable mountainous areas in the north and south. The sizable landform located in the northern part of Daegu is called Palgongsan Mountain. The monthly occurrence of mountain and valley winds, and the resulting local-scale thermal characteristics, were investigated using meteorological data observed at this mountain for the last seven years (November 2013 to October 2020). According to the results of this investigation, mountain and valley winds occurred during 523 days of the last seven years (annual average 74 days). Among them, 183 were in spring, 144 in summer, 181 in autumn, and 78 in winter. Seasonally, mountain and valley winds occurred most frequently in spring (March~May) and the least in winter (December~February), and the days of occurrence in spring accounted for approximately half of the days of occurrence in a year. Owing to the summer monsoon, the amount of sunny days and occurrence of mountain and valley winds were minute in July. During the days in summer when mountain and valley winds occurred, the difference in daily minimum temperatures between mountainous and urban areas reached approximately 3°C.
