(Background and Purpose) The church, which used to be a space for members only for the focus of worship and the confession of faith, gradually changed its role, and a complex space catering to the local community has emerged. The importance of the connection between the church and the community has been repeatedly emphasized, and attempts are still being made to reinforce the connection, through time sharing with the church, connecting with the public domain, and using the open space together. Community connection through a complex of churches has been found to be more important in isolated areas lacking basic living infrastructure than in cities with abundant infrastructure. This is because it is more meaningful to provide infrastructure through complexation, and it is easy to define the context of the local community and link it accordingly. Nevertheless, most preceding studies have targeted cities directly under direct government or small and medium-sized cities. This study focused on island areas in Korea with poor access, limited living radius, and insufficient infrastructure. We compared the church complexes in the two island regions in Baengnyeongdo and Socheongdo. (Method) The churches in the two selected regions have the most distinct differences in population characteristics and infrastructure within the five West Sea Islands, which have the least accessibility among the island regions located in Incheon, and have the characteristics of a military cavalry. The characteristics of the community were investigated through surveys, and a church complex strategy and community program were created taking into account the characteristics of the community. The program space strategy was planned considering the population characteristics of the two island regions, and the layout, movement strategy, and mass planning were based on the complex strategy determined from the physical analysis. (Results) The island regions did not show much difference in the types of complex programs in prior studies, but due to the lack of professional manpower, the program was operated through exchanges with local residents. Accordingly, the space was planned such that exchanges could take place through an open, multipurpose space. (Conclusion) Without compromising on the religious symbolism, it is necessary to develop a complex space and program plan that meets the characteristics of the local community and the needs of local residents. Further research is necessary to understand church compounding, taking into account the characteristics of various communities, not limited to cities.
