This study aims to explore how North Korean women defectors’ “North Korean” identity hampers the role of “parents” when interacting with South Koreans parents and how they compromise and recontruct their identity. I conducted in-depth interviews with 10 women defector parents and 5 South Korean counterparts and found that they choose to be “voluntarily alienated” from parents’ meetings so that their North Korean identity is not revealed. This was not a passive evasion but a strategy to actively play the parental roles. Also, they “observe and imitate” South Korean parents, or suggest an “alternative identity” to their children to evade prejudices. This study shows that parental roles push North Korean women defectors to compromise their North Korean identity, which should be taken into account when making policies on their social integration.
