Discrimination of individuals with psychiatric disabilities is likely to result in violations of their human rights through subsequent self-stigma and social exclusion. This study aims to examine the effects of discrimination experience on self-stigma and to test if the relationship is mediated by causal attributions of psychiatric disabilities to interpersonal stress. Daily life discrimination experiences analyzed included discrimination in health care, employment, education, and housing. Structural equation modeling analysis was conducted on 669 individuals with psychiatric disabilities who participated in a survey on individuals with psychiatric disabilities conducted in 2017. The major findings were as follows; First, the higher the level of medical and employment discrimination, the higher the level of self-stigma. Second, the effect of employment discrimination experiences on self-stigma was fully mediated by interpersonal stress attribution, and the effect of medical discrimination experiences on self-stigma was partially mediated by interpersonal stress attribution. Based on the findings, practical implications for the prevention and mitigation of self-stigma were discussed.
