This study examines Korean Japanese learners’ usage of TOKORO expressions and investigates learners’ errors by using the International Corpus of Japanese as a Second Language (I-JAS). Compared to Japanese native speakers, the Korean learners in a JFL environment have the following characteristics in their use of TOKORO expressions.
1) TOKORO is overwhelmingly used as a noun. However, there is some confusion between the temporal meanings of TOKORO and TOKI or KORO.
2) An end-of-sentence expression is relatively easy to use but there is little variation in the use of it compared to native speakers of Japanese.
3) In the task of their storytelling and story writing, the ratio of the use of conjunctive particles is lower than that of native speakers of Japanese. It is one of the grammatical items that are difficult to acquire and learners’ instances of non-use of conjunctions can lead to overuse of conjunctions in compositions.
Although various sentence patterns using formal nouns are important items to learn for enhancing learners’ expressiveness, they are difficult for learners to learn. At the intermediate level and above, it is necessary to practice example sentences and provide appropriate guidance so that it will lead to the actual usage of conjunctive particles in learners’ output.
