Background: Safety accidents are increasing rapidly due to the recent increase in sports activities and a surge in personal mobility. The easiest way to prevent injury is to wear protective equipment. However, protective equipment causes inconvenience and stress to the wearer, so the perception of wearing protective gear is currently low. Therefore, it is very important to increase the wearing rate by developing a product that meets the user's preference. Most of the preceding studies focused on the effect of wearing a protector on the body and improving the function of the protector, and the most important study on users is insignificant. Therefore, in this study, preferences are objectively derived through user analysis, and they are converted into databases and used for actual product development.
Methods: In this study, user analysis was first conducted to establish product development guidelines for knee-shin guards. The user group was divided into groups with experience in purchasing and wearing knee-shin guards while riding bicycles, former athletes, technicians, and club quasi-experts, and the general group conducted a survey and the expert group conducted focus group interviews to analyze the results. In addition, a design preference survey was conducted to prepare product development guidelines by reflecting the results of preference analysis as a whole.
Results: The preference requirements of the general group and the expert group were found to be slightly different in terms of price and performance. However, knee-shank protective products currently sold in the market did not show a clear difference in preference depending on the design. Accordingly, protector product design has similar preferences and can reflect common preferences in all groups, but functions differ by group, which must be reflected in the future product development process, and the exact user group should be targeted according to the protector product's needs.
Conclusions: None of the knee-shin guards currently sold in the market meet user preferences 100%. This also means that if the user preference is reflected as much as possible in new development products, it can emerge as a new product in the sports knee-shin protector market. To this end, if this study investigates and analyzes user preferences in various ways and reflects the guidelines prepared based on the results as much as possible and uses them for actual new product development, a new sports knee-shin protector product with consumer preferences and design can be developed.
