This study explored the stigma experience of out-of-school adolescents through qualitative research methods. The data analysis was conducted to 16 adolescents in early and mid-20s with experience of school dropout. This study applied Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis(2012) based on Corrigan and Koysluk’s social cognitive model of stigma(2014). The results were classified into public stigma and self stigma, and each was subdivided into stereotype, prejudice, and discrimination. Stereotype in public stigma was derived into 5 categories such as ‘adolescent who has to go back to school’ etc. Prejudice was derived into 4 categories such as ‘concerned,’ etc. And discrimination was derived into 5 categories such as ‘not hiding prejudiced negative views’ etc. Stereotype in self stigma was classified into 6 categories such as ‘individual situations and choices are not respected’ etc. Prejudice was classified into 6 categories such as ‘loneliness,’ ‘remorse’ etc. And discrimination was classified into 4 categories such as ‘evaluating and perceiving self negatively’ etc. Also, as a result of the analysis, although it is not explained in the social cognitive model of stigma, the coping behaviors of dropout adolescents to alleviate stigma were revealed, and this was thematically categorized as ‘coping behaviors against stigma’ and derived into five categories. Based on the research results, discussions and implications were presented.
