The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of Mentalization and Distress Tolerance in the relationship between Insecure Attachment on Depression in Early Adulthood. For this purpose, a survey was conducted with 384 adults aged 18-35 who are in early adulthood using Experience of Close Relationship-R(ECR-R), Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale(CES-D), Korean Version of The Mentalization Scale(K-Ments), Distress Tolerance Scale(DTS). The collected data were analyzed by the descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, structural equation model verification and mediating effects verification. As a result, first, Insecure Attachment, Depression, Mentalization, Distress Tolerance all showed significant correlations. Anxious Attachment and Avoidance Attachment had a positive correlation with Depression respectively, and Anxious Attachment, Avoidance Attachment, Mentalization and Distress Tolerance showed negative correlations respectively. In addition, Mentalization had a positive correlation with Distress Tolerance. Mentalization and Distress Tolerance had a negative correlation with Depression respectively. Second, The mediating effect of Mentalization in the relationship between Anxious Attachment, Avoidance Attachment and Depression was significant. Third, The mediating effect of Distress Tolerance in the relationship between Anxious Attachment and Depression was significant, but in the relationship between Avoidance Attachment and Depression was not significant. Fourth, The double mediating effect of Mentalization and Distress Tolerance in the relationship between Anxious Attachment, Avoidance Attachment and Depression was significant. Based on these results, the implications, limitations of this study and suggestions for future studies were discussed.
