Since the 1910 Edinburgh World Missions Conference adopted the firm agenda of the ecumenical movement as missionary training and theological education, theological education of ecumenism has become an important area in Christian missions and the ecumenical movement. Along with this history, the 10th Busan General Assembly adopted a joint declaration of “Ecumenical Covenant on Theological Education (hereinafter ‘Education Document’)”.
Although the purpose of this 'Education Document' is to "emphasize the strategic importances of ecumenical training and theological education, and also to remind the church of its responsibility in the context of new challenges for the 21st century," it is regrettable that it failed to offer more practical and concrete ways to church education and faith education. Nevertheless, it is very encouraging that, as the ‘Education Document’ declared “educating all God’s people” as the core of Christian mission, our theological education in this 21st century began to take an interest in “ministry for children” and “theology for children.” Indeed, there is an urgent need for ecumenical leaders, especially in this rapidly changing landscapes of World Christianity. Further, faith education in individual churches also seeks for ecumenical sensibility.
In this context, this paper reexamines the importance and necessity of ecumenical education by looking back at the historical implications of the Education Document. Further, it proposes the united Sunday School as a model for Korean faith education of ecumenism, aiming at ‘becoming-neighbor’ beyond the black and white thinking in our life of faith by exposing the problems of normative education of faith in our institutionalized church.
