The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between self-object experience and displaced aggression based on the theory of self-psychology. Therefore, this study examined whether internalized shame is meaningful as a mediating variable, and self-conceptual clarity controls the mediating effect of internalized shame as a moderating variable by establishing an adjusted mediating model. To verify the study, 339 adults aged 18 and over were investigated with the scales of self-object experience, displaced aggression, internalized shame, and self-concept clarity. The results are as follows; First, Self-object experience showed negative correlations with internalized shame, displaced aggression, and positive correlations with self-concept clarity. Second, internalized shame was completely mediated in the relationship between self-object experience and displaced aggression. Third, there was a moderating effect on the internalized shame according to the level of self-concept clarity. Finally, self-concept clarity predicted a significant effect on internalized shame and displaced aggression through the controlled mediating effect test. Through the results of this study, it was considered that the internalized shame caused by the lack of self-object experience could predict the problem of displaced aggression. Also, for effective therapeutic intervention in counseling with clients with displaced aggression, it means that reducing internalized shame and increasing self-concept clarity by exploring initial self-object experience is effective. Finally, suggestions for follow-up studies and limitations of this study were discussed.
