Realist photography was the most dominant photographic movement in Korea in the 1950s. The term ‘realist photography’ refers to a photographic style that combines the characteristics of humanist or social documentary and straight photography through unstaged snapshot. This study examines closely the discourse of the Japanese and the Korean realist photography movement, tracing the characteristics and the aesthetic implications of Korean realist photography, received and inherited from the Japanese realist photography movement. This study provides a new perspective on the conception of the 1950’s realist movement in the historical discourse of Korean photography, by noting that the reality of photographic representation was the medium through which the discourse of realist photography combined two aesthetic conceptions which are generally regarded as contrary: the modernist theory emphasizing the inherent characteristics of photographic medium, and the realist or journalistic theory as documentation of society and human life. The origin of such characteristic of realist photography lies in the historical context of the Japanese photography. The proponents of the Japanese realist photography movement, Ken Domon and Ihei Kimura, who had been active as photojournalists from the 1930s, advocated the ‘modern photography’ that documents the postwar Japanese society by taking full advantage of mechanism of camera in contrast to the pictorial photography called ‘salon picture’, based on the context of the Japanese photojournalism or reportage photography(報道写真). Japanese reportage photography was frequently connected to 1930s modern photography movement called ‘Shinkoshashin(新興写真, New Photography)’ from its beginning, and justified its role in wartime propaganda by appropriating a part of the modernist photography theory. The reception of the realist photography in Korea was due to the need of the theory of photographic medium in the struggle to promote photography as an independent and legitimate form of modern art, in the process of reorganization of the world of photography after the Korean War following the liberation from the Japanese colonial rule. The discourse of realist photography in Korea served as an aesthetic idea on the medium that approved the mechanism and the automatism of photography as the essential formal characteristic of the medium, while allowing the intervention of the subjectivity by the artist.
