Background : Design Thinking is a problem-solving technique that involves the participation of users. It is gaining popularity and is now being used in a variety of sectors. Design thinking workshops including a variety of stakeholders and non-specialists have become popular, but there is a lack of research on the precise roles that novice design facilitators and non-experts, rather than professional facilitators, should play in the design process. In this study, we propose that we can better organize design thinking workshops by deriving essential roles from in-depth interviews with experts.
Methods : In order to determine the key role of a facilitator who can lead a successful workshop that fosters group members' creativity and provides good outcomes, in-depth interviews were performed with three experts with more than 10 years of experience. Video conferencing, voice calls, and face-to-face methods were used for in-depth interviews. The findings from interviews and affinity diagram analyses were matched to stages of the design thinking process. These resulting findings were organized to suggest the roles of a good facilitator.
Results : We determined the six roles of Instructor, Timekeeper, Visualizer, Stimulator, Supporter, and Finisher by matching the interview and affinity diagram findings to the design thinking process stages. Based on these theoretical roles, corresponding practical actions were derived. We identified the four actions of instructing, coaching, supporting, and delegating. Based on these results, roles, competencies, and actions focused on each stage were derived.
Conclusions : By matching the analysis of in-depth interviews with the stages of the design thinking process, six roles, competencies, and four actions were derived in this study. A facilitator's role in a successful design thinking workshop is complex and requires a high level of expertise. As a result, the goal of this research is to simplify the facilitator's knowledge from a practical standpoint. We expect that by providing roles and practical activities, novice facilitators and non-experts will be able to successfully run a design thinking workshop that can be used in a variety of industries and fields of application.
