This article examines the structure and the purpose of writing The Tale of Yi Chungmu by Baekun Sim Daeyun (沈大允, 1806-1872). In terms of the structure of this work, Sim extracted various references from The Collection of Yi Sunsin Documents (李忠武公全書) to write The Tale of Yi Chungmu. He particularly referred to the contents in The Record of the Restoration during King Seonjo’s Reign (宣廟中興志) to narrate the joint operation between Joseon and Ming Dynasty in detail. This article analyzes the characteristics of Sim’s view on Yi Sunsin by comparing The Tale of Yi Chungmu to the mainstream perspective on Yi Sunsin during the late Joseon period while paying attention to how Sim’s existence and thoughts meet literature in the text by relating this work to Sim’s other prose works and books. Contrary to the mainstream perspective which glorified Yi Sunsin’s sacrifice as an act of loyalty to the king, Sim introduced the folklore about Yi Sunsin’s suicide and sympathized with Yi’s unfortunate life which was inopportune for his talent. Sim’s sense of identity as a member of collapsed family was reflected in his view of Yi Sunsin. Meanwhile, Sim defined Yi Sunsin as “an admiral and prime minister who excelled in both literary and military arts” (文武將相) and emphasized his flexibility and tolerance. His view, which is based on his values on education and recruitment, accepted and expanded on the previous appraisal of Yi Sunsin’s ability. In the late Joseon period, Yi Sunsin’s military service was honored in connection to Joseon’s loyalty to the Ming Dynasty. However, Sim argued that Yi made more notable accomplishments than the Ming army despite the difficult circumstances. Sim’s sense of identity as an intellect from a peripheral country, combined with his thoughts on Sino-barbarian dichotomy, was reflected in his view of Yi Sunsin. The Tale of Yi Chungmu demonstrates his endeavor to prove his value as a prose writer and represent his existence and thoughts through a literary work.
