The shellmound is where various artifacts and ecofacts along with shells, were discarded, and contains many sources that can reveal the culture of the time. These shellmounds increased rapidly during the Iron Age. This study sought to shed light on the formative background of the shellmound in the Iron Age of the Honam Province.
First, the shellmounds are divided into three regions: the Jeonbuk West Coast, the Jeonnam Southwest Coast, and the Jeonnam South Coast, and carefully analyzed the potteries, earthworks, ironwares, Chinese coin (貨泉), and oracle bones (卜骨) excavated from the shellmound. The date of the shellmounds were divided into four periods based on the pattern of potteries that appeared in the strata of the Haenam Gungokri shellmound.
Next, in order to shed light on the formative background of the shellmound, factors such as the previously claimed high-altitude location, the cooling of the climate, and the development of sea routes were examined. Based on this, we looked at the formative background of the shellmound, and found that the shellmound of the first period was mainly formed in the west coast of Jeonbuk Province, which is connected to the new influx of attached-rim pottery with round band from the northeast region of China. The shellmound of the second and third period were formed mainly on the southwest and south coasts, which can be explained by the development of sea routes as the migration of the inhabitants and trade were activated. And by the forth period, the shellmound spread throughout the region, which is seen as the formative background of the progress in the Iron Age culture along with the cold cooling of the climate.
