This study aims to outline the history of small movie theaters in Incheon by examining the regional distribution of locations of small movie theaters in Incheon in the 1980s and 1990s. To this end, the Incheon area was divided into three regions: Nam-gu, Buk-gu, and Jung-gu and Dong-gu.
Chapter 2 examined the situation of local theaters in Incheon in 1981 and the background of the appearance of ‘small theater’. In 1970, the number of local theaters in Incheon was 18. However, by 1981, there were 13 locations. In the 1980s, the number of local theaters in Korea increased rapidly. This is because, through the performance law amended in 1981, it was legally possible to open a ‘small theater’ with less than 300 seats. As a result, many small movie theaters were opened in Incheon, and the number of local theaters increased again.
Chapter 3 reconstructed the development of small movie theaters in Incheon in the 1980s. The regional diffusion of the screening space was achieved by opening a small movie theater in an area where there was no movie theater. In the 1980s, a total of 19 small movie theaters were opened in Incheon. Nine of them were opened in Nam-gu. In this area, the distribution of locations of small movie theaters was spread along the east-west axis with ‘Jungang Geugjang’ as the center.
In Buk-gu, 7 small movie theaters were newly opened in the 1980s in addition to the existing 4 local theaters. In this area, the locations of small movie theaters were distributed along the north-south axis centered on Bupyeong Station.
In Jung-gu and Dong-gu, in addition to the existing 5 local theaters, 3 small movie theaters were opened. The locations of small movie theaters in this area showed that the distribution of the existing local theaters was maintained.
Chapter 4 reconstructed the decline of small movie theaters in Incheon in the 1990s. The popularization of video culture in the 1990s had a major impact on the decline of local theaters. The reorganization of the landscape of the theaters in Incheon is also related to this situation.
There are two major aspects of the change of small movie theaters in Incheon. One was to close the business, and the other was to change to a 'small video theater', a similar industry. As a result, it was confirmed that all small movie theaters with a single screen disappeared in Incheon.
