Corrective relational experience(CRE) is a client’s subjective experience in a therapeutic relationship of counseling and psychotherapy closely related to the counseling outcome. However, because of the internal experiences of the client and the conceptual characteristics that are difficult to explore, there have been limitations in empirically studying it. We theoretically explored its conceptual characteristics distinguished from the various phenomena of counseling relationships so that the CRE could be approached clearly and explicitly in research or counseling practicum. As a result of the exploration focusing on the client’s phenomenological experience, we defined the CRE as an emotional relearning experience of new relationships that occurs by correcting the client’s interpersonal rules in the inter-subjective relational context with the counselor. We established a conceptual model of CRE for practical use, reflecting the results. Finally, possibilities for applying the conceptual model to research, counseling, and counseling education were discussed, and the implications and limitations of this study were presented.
