The purpose of this research was to verify the mediating effects of traumatized self-system in the relationship between psychological abuse experienced in groups and the impact of traumatic events focusing on the abusive religious group ex-members. A total of 135 former adult members, who belonged to religious groups and experienced psychological abuse but currently withdrew from the group, participated in a survey measuring the level of their psychological abuse experienced in groups, the impact of traumatic events, and traumatized self-system. And then, the collected data were analyzed. The findings were as follows: First, the correlation analysis confirmed that psychological abuse experienced in groups was positively related to traumatized self-system and the impact of traumatic events significantly. That is, the more psychological abuse experienced in groups, the more traumatized self-system, and they experienced more of the impact of traumatized events. Second, as a result of verifying the mediating effect of traumatized self-system in the psychological abuse experienced in groups and the impact of traumatic events, it was found that the psychological abuse experienced in groups affected the impact of traumatic events by damaging the self-system. These results confirmed that the psychological abuse experienced as adults in groups damaged the already-formed self-system and affected the impact of traumatized events. Based on the results, the implications and limitations of this study, and directions for future research were discussed.
