This thesis aims to examine the name, structure, function and role of Geolgichae widely used in the field farming areas in the mountains of Gangwon-do. Kimmaegi[Weeding] was the most difficult and important agricultural work, to the extent that it was called ‘war on weeds.’ This conception was reflected in overall agricultural culture such as farming methods, agricultural equipments, and cultivated crops. In particular, various agricultural methods and agricultural equipments were products developed for effective weeding. The hoe had the advantage of being able to weed more precisely than any other agricultural equipments, but it was laborious, labor intensive, and slow. Using a cow-drawn plow, that is, Geolgichae was an idea of overcoming this shortcoming. Geolgichae is generally called Huchi or Geulgjaeng-i, and in Gangwon-do, it was often called Hulchi or Geolgichae. Geolgichae, called ‘Gadal Hori’ in Gangwon-do, has a sung-ae[plow heam] that splits into two. It clearly distinguishes itself from a plow, a plowing farm tool, in appearance, and functions distinctively. Geolgichae reflects the characteristics of parallel farming with rice fields centered on fields in Gangwon-do. Because of the Geolgichae, a unique two-year, three-crop cropping system based on intercropping was possible in the field farming area of the Korean Peninsula. In short, Geolgichae was developed maintaining its own unique position separate from the plow which is optimal for plowing work.
