Background : National Rehabilitation Center has built and operated an open-source platform to share appropriate assistive technology since 2020. In order to respond to the demand, assistive technology for unpacking was developed. The purpose is to proceed with the development of appropriate assistive technology by applying co-design to improve user satisfaction and accessibility to assistive technology, and to examine the process and results.
Methods : Developing open-sourced appropriate assistive technology consisted of four processes: receiving demand from consumers, developing, demonstrating, and sharing of information. During the development process, three times co-design workshops were held with users, designs, and developers, from defining the requirements to the second development. Assistive technologies were evaluated for usability. This usability evaluation used task performance score, time, Korean Version-Quebec User Evaluation of Satisfaction with Assistive Technology Version 2.0, System Usability Scale, and Individually Prioritized Problem Assessment for people with spinal cord injury.
Results : For unpacking, an integrated scissor holding product and a modular scissor holding product have been developed. The integrated type and modular type had the same results in terms of effectiveness and efficiency, but the integrated type had higher user satisfaction. An uncomplicated design optimized for the main function of unpacking was preferred. In addition, IPPA average score for unpacking activity was 11.33 (± 5.03).
Conclusion : The assistive technology developed through the co-design workshop supported with tools, materials, and a facilitator to visualize user needs as ideas and help users and developers communicate with each other has high user satisfaction in the usability evaluation. Users are not simply a research subject for design inspiration, but are actively involved in the development of assistive technology as a research participant, and the quality of development results has been improved. In future studies, it is necessary to analyze several cases of design development of appropriate assistive technology through co-design, define effective co-design methods for appropriate assistive technology.
