To verity the effect of US naval power in maintaining the stability in the sea, this study analyzes maritime claims in the Western Hemisphere and Europe from 1944 to 2001. The empirical results show that at the macro (systemic) level, the preponderant naval power of the naval hegemon decreases the number of militarized disputes over maritime claims. At the micro level, the results reveal that the influence of the naval hegemon in maintaining the order in the sea varies depending on the characteristics of maritime claims.
