This study attempts to highlight the area of shame in the emotional map of Korean classical novels by focusing on the emotion of shame in the 18th-century Korean classical novel Ogwonjaehapgiyeon. This literary work mainly deals with the shame of the main characters, the heroine Lee Hyun-young and her father Lee Won-ui, and depicts them throughout a lengthy narrative. The novel allows us to examine how emotions that can be classified into the same type of ‘shame’ are portrayed and represented differently in the same text. The shame experienced by each character is produced by being aware of the gaze of certain others, and also serves as a starting point of introspection to become a virtuous person. However, shame is portrayed as an emotion that needs to be properly controlled and cared for. In particular, concerning the shame of female characters, Ogwonjaehapgiyeon, unlike other classical novels such as Sookyoungnangjajeon where the female character commits suicide due to shame, reconsiders the epistemological link that directly connects women’s shameful life to death. Accordingly, this novel portrays the female characters living despite the shame and details of the twists of their lives. In this novel, we can relate to the female characters who are constantly exposed to the feeling of shame as they confront, accept, and deal with it throughout their lives. Furthermore, Ogwonjaehapgiyeon not only depicts virtuous characters who respond sensitively to shame but also mediocre characters who are indifferent to shame by arguing their values. Thereby, this novel shows an integrative understanding of human beings, while building a rich narrative world.
