This paper aims to research Yu Wonpyo(劉元杓)’s life from 1910 to 1929 when he died. The results are as follows.
In April 1910, Yu visited Japan as a tourist of 2nd Japan tour group which was organized by KyungsungIlbo(京城日報), and this experience of visiting Japan influenced him to regard Japan as the absolute standard of civilization and enlightenment. After his return from Japan, Yu began to follow the colonial policy of Japan actively, the key example was organizing of Seoul tour group. The aim of Seoul tour group was the propaganda of the colonial policy.
When Japan participated in World War I and occupied the strategic points in China and the North Pacific, Yu published his poet(夢坐富士山最上頭 望見東西地球) in MaeilSinbo(每日申報). This poet reflected the optimistic mood of World War I caused by Japan’s win, the theory of social evolution, the total denial of Neo-Confucianism and the expectation of Datong(大同) era. Especially it was watched that there was a similar logic of Datong(大同) era between this poet and Kang Youwei(康有爲)’s Datong Shu(大同書).
Many opinions of world peace were suggested after the end of World War I, Yu stated his view of world peace, which was called Gakbyeongron(榷兵論). It was an argument that the standing armies in all countries should be abolished and all of military facilities should be placed only in Jeju(濟州) Island. However, his argument was just a fragmentary thought, so it did not receive much acclaim.
In later years, the evaluation of Yu had completely changed. Kim Jingu(金振九) regarded him as an outdated and narrow-minded person, because Yu clung to his old opinion of regarding Japan as the absolute standard of civilization and enlightenment. He was no longer meaningful presence especially for the young intellectual.
