Studies on information and service design of public transportation are targeting various transportation vulnerabilities, but it is difficult to find research cases targeting the developmental disabled. This study seeks to apply sign graphics that can provide end-point direction information applicable to subway guide signs for people with developmental disabilities who have difficulty understanding the direction of movement in the subway.
Methods
As an interdisciplinary joint study of design and social welfare, qualitative research, quantitative research, and design development were conducted in accordance with the Service Design process. Contextual interviews and surveys were conducted for people with developmental disabilities and assistants, including focus group interviews(FGI), and needs and insights were derived based on a series of survey analysis results and reflected in design development. The review process was continued within the expert group through on-site image simulation and virtual scenarios using it.
Results
According to the survey and analysis, the most difficult part of using the subway was that people with developmental disabilities could not recognize their direction of movement when they got lost, and assistants also said that efficient support was difficult when this situation occurred. To solve this problem, we proposed a sign graphic applicable to the existing subway guide sign using basic graphic figures and arrows that can be recognized by people with developmental disabilities.
Conclusion
This proposal is expected to help not only the developmental disabled but also the transportation vulnerable who are limited in using language information-based subway sign, and it is meaningful to explore the possibility of joint research in design and other studies on various social problems to solve in establishing Community Care policies.
