This paper examined the perception of Chinese children’s lives in Child life in China compiled by British missionary Mary Bryson in 1900 and contemporary missionaries’ Chinese cultural books. The contents covered in Child life in China and Chinese cultural books by contemporary missionaries, as well as the description and perception of Chinese children revealed in them, were considered. In writings of missionaries, children were emphasized as the starting point of missionary work and an important channel of adult missionary work. Child life in China focused on ‘disregard for girls’ and ‘idolatry’, which contradicted Christian ideology, and expressed the legitimacy of Christian missions.
