The aim of this study is to explore the activities of ShingungBongjaehoe (神宮封齋會) of Japan in modern Korea and its Koreans’ reactions. The view on this matter is a contextual epistemology that religious groups are recognized by economic, political, and social characteristics, depending on the context. This study looked into the historical traits of the ShingungBongjaehoe, its operations in Korea, and its Koreans’ responses such as ShingungBonggyonghoe (神宮奉敬會) and ShingungGyonguihoe (神宮敬義會). Firstly, ShingungBongjaehoe was started as the Church of Ise Shrine (1872), changed into the Shingunggyo(神宮敎, 1882), and later transfomed into a private group (1889) for the distribution of JinguTaima (神宮大麻, Exorcism Stick). It is noteworthy that the boundary between Sect Shinto and Shrine Shinto (Jinzya-Shinto, 神社神道) was unclear because Ise Faith acted as a bridge among the two categories, such as ShingungBongjaehoe(1889). Next, Shingunggyo commenced missionary work in Joseon in 1894, and ShingungBongjaehoe began operations in the Korean Empire after 1906. This marks the entrance of modern Ise faith into the Korean Peninsula, collaborated with Sect Shinto groups that boasted the same Ise faith. Next, looking at the Koreans’ responses, groups such as ShingungBonggyonghoe(1906, reconstructed by 1909), ShingungGyonguihoe(1909), and Cheonjogyo(天祖敎) related to ShingungBongjaehoe or Ise faith came into existence.
These groups were recognized differently into context, blurring the boundary between the political-economic and religious dimensions. This study suggests two things. One is that the demarcation between Sect Shinto and Shrine Shinto was unclear in the modern era. The other is that the perception of religious and non- religious dimentions was not evident in the modern era.
