Byeongin-yangyo is a historical fact in which the French fleet invaded Joseon twice in 1866. Historical narratives cannot help but focus on events, and the recorded history is used as the basis for forming national identity. In the ideology of a modern state, history and nation are inseparable. How you overcame the hardships is an important factor. However, we must remember that behind the historical facts were the lives of the people who had to live through that era. This is because the things they had to go through cannot be explained by history as public memory. So we have to fill that empty space with personal and cultural memories. Only then will we be able to understand the true nature of historical events.
In this article, works from the time of Byeongin-yangyo were Oksu Jo Myeonho’s “Seosajapjeol”(Chinese poetry), Naju Lim Clan’s “Byeongin-yangranrok” (Diary) and Yang Hunsu’s “Byeongin Diary”. I tried to look into the agitation of public sentiment at that time. In particular, the period from September 18th to November 21st is an important time for the people as it is the harvest season. At this time, the situation of the residents of Ganghwa Island, who had to go through the war, was roughly considered. As later works, Go Jae-hyeong’s “Shimdojourney”(Chinese poetry), Lee Kun-chang's “Lee Chun-il jeon”(prose), and novels such as “Byeonginyangyo-a.k.a. Han Janggun jeon” and “Seojinsa jeon” were examined. It can be seen that there are deviations in the evaluation of the characters mentioned in these works depending on the point of view. On the other hand, by referring to the writings of Henri Zubet's, Henri Jouan’s report, and Liddell's letter, etc., the gaze of the invaders was briefly examined.
“Study on the writing of Byeongin-yangyo” began with raising the question of the need for a cultural approach based on personal memories beyond a historical approach to the wars that our people experienced around the modern era. Byeonginyangyo can be said to be the starting point in discussing Joseon in the enlightenment period. Perhaps that is why you can often see novels based on this period as historical material. In these works, a difference in point of view is inevitably revealed depending on who is set as the main character, such as Daewongun, Empress Myeongseong, or a person from the enlightenment group. Research on this is left as a task.
