In this article, I looked at Yang Young-hee’s documentary film “Soup and Ideology”, focusing on the “Female narrative” and “Inheritance of memories” in the “Jeju 4・3”, while alsoI tried to consider what kind of influence it had on the world of her work.
Based on the oral history of a survivor mother, this work is a pioneering work that shows that Jeju 4・3 was a history that penetrated South Korea, Japan, and North Korea. About 60 years after the incident, Yang Young-hee’s mother finally confessed to her daughter(author) that she was also at the “scene of the massacre” during Jeju 4・3, 1948. As a result, that turns the long-held hatred for her mother, who sent her three sons to North Korea on a “repatriation project” into pity. However, her mother’s symptoms of Alzheimer’s had progressed, and she had forgotten about Jeju April 3, and even the word “repatriation project”.
With the aging of the parties concerned, it is urgent to inherit memories, and the value of this film, which directly inherited memories from the mother who is closest to the author, is immeasurable.
In particular, when I reconsidered Jeju 4・3 from the perspective of the inheritance of memories from mother to daughter, that is, from woman to woman, it was once again recognized how close state violence and gender violence are in various stories of women who lived at the same time as mother.
In addition, it should be highly evaluated that the film served as a great opportunity to broaden awareness of 「Jeju 4・3」 and Koreans in Japan, which were not well known in Japanese society until now.
