The realm of enlightenment is something humans, as the masters of all things, should strive for in pursuit of inner peace and tranquility. Meditation for mental stability, deokdo related to the realization of truth, and yangsaeng related to mental and physical discipline have been continuously observed through history.
The philosophical principles of Eastern philosophy and the religious experiences of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism have guided humans towards the path of enlightenment. In Daoist philosophy, Laozi elucidated the principle underlying the universe, referred to as the Dao, while Zhuangzi revealed the realm of human enlightenment with the specific term deokdo (Attaining Dao, 得道). The objective of this research is to examine both Laozi, who illuminated the essence of Dao, and Zhuangzi, who articulated deokdo drawing on Laozi’s understanding of Dao, from the same perspective. There's a risk in understanding the Dao as discussed by Laozi and Zhuangzi only from a nature-centric perspective or solely focusing on the theory of nurturing the physical body, so this research adopts a critical perspective.
Therefore, the path to deokdo requires a correct understanding of the Dao as explained by Laozi and Zhuangzi. One must accurately grasp the fundamental nature of Dao, consider the relationship with humans from a nature-centric perspective, and not just focus on physical well-being but also follow spiritual discipline; this is the path to achieving deokdo. In today's world, the depletion of natural resources under the guise of “development” is becoming severe.
Recognizing the issues of modern society that centers on artificial civilizational progress, the Daoist philosophy of ancient China, which integrates humans and nature, and mind and body, becomes significant. As the term On-go-ji-shin (drawing lessons from the past to innovate for the future) suggests, if contemporary people engrave the teachings of ancient sages, they will reach the true realm of enlightenment, the true deokdo.
