The present study explores how a Korean non-native English-speaking (NNES) business professor constructed, projected, and negotiated his multiple and changing identities over time (i.e., before, during, and after PhD study) and space (i.e., Seoul, Philadelphia, and West Lafayette). Taking a narrative approach, the author collected both big stories (i.e., interviews) and small stories (i.e., naturally occurring conversations) to provide a detailed description of Kim’s personal histories and future aspirations. Through the lens of capital (Bourdieu, 1986) and social class (Marx, 1976), the author illustrated how his identity, capital, and social class closely interacted with one another as his academic journey from Korea to the United States unfolded. Kim actively reconstructed and transformed his identity, capital, and class as his social roles and settings changed. As a NNES professor, Kim ultimately developed a newly imagined identity, i.e., that of a cosmopolitan citizen. The findings offer a more complete picture of his identity development and shed light on the multiplicity and fluidity of second language (L2) identity construction.
