This research paper investigates the stock price performance and liquidity effects of reverse stock splits, employing Amihud's non-liquidity measure and turnover ratio as liquidity indicators. It is differentiated from previous studies in that it analyzes the effect on the liquidity of stock prices and the number of shares after reverse stock splits.
Our empirical findings are as follows: First, reverse stock splits reduce liquidity, contrary to the existing liquidity hypothesis that argues for increased liquidity. Second, a decrease in the number of shares after a merger causes an increase (decrease) in the illiquidity measure, and a post-merger stock price increase reduces the turnover rate. As a result, the increase in stock price and decrease in the number of shares due to the stock merger lead to a deterioration in liquidity. Third, no significant stock price response is observed on the announcement date, but a positive (+) excess return is found on the listing date. Finally, lower pre-stock prices correspond to higher listing date returns. Low-priced stocks can get the greater the positive benefits from the reverse stock splits
