This study examines the impact of disruptions in the Global Value Chain (GVC) on South Korea's inflation volatility, distinguishing between the periods before and after the pandemic onset. Utilizing monthly time series data from 2000 to 2023, we empirically analyzed the effect of external factors related to the global supply chain, such as the ratio of intermediate goods exports and imports to total exports and imports, and the Global Supply Chain Pressure Index, on domestic inflation gap variables. This was done in conjunction with domestic factors like expected inflation and the business sentiment index gap. The time series analysis showed that the self-fulfilling inflationary pressure factor of expected inflation and the domestic demand-side pressure factor of the business sentiment index gap exerted a positive influence on domestic inflation. However, their impact varied between the pre- and post-pandemic periods. The Global Supply Chain Pressure Index, which indicates the degree of global supply chain disruption, had a positive effect on inflation for the entire period and the pre-pandemic period. In contrast, the proportion of intermediate goods imports seemed to mitigate inflation. When changing the dependent variable to two core inflation rates, similar results were obtained. These findings empirically confirm that global supply chain-related factors have influenced South Korea's inflation to some extent. It underscores the need for meticulous inflation stabilization policies in preparation for exogenous shocks from the external sector.
