In this study, I analyzed the effect of price discrimination on corporate profits and consumer surplus in a two-sided market where platform companies provide services to heterogeneous agents consisting of normal type and small type. In a platform market, consumers can order large quantities or small quantities of a product. Likewise, advertisers may release advertisements above a certain level or a small amount of advertisements.
Targeting these heterogeneous advertisers and subscribers, platform companies implement price discrimination strategies to recruit more advertisers.
It is analyzed that platform companies that provide services to heterogeneous agents can earn more profits through price discrimination when the negative (-) cross-group externality of consumers is significant. Compared to providing services to homogeneous agents, the conditions for price discrimination to become an attractive pricing strategy for platform companies are much stronger. This is because the negative (-) cross-group externality that can offset the price reduction effect that occurs due to price discrimination and positive (+) cross-group externality is small due to small-type agents with low transaction volumes. It is also shown that when subscribers dislike advertising significantly, not only corporate profits can be lowered under price discrimination compared to uniform pricing scheme, but consumer surplus can also be lowered.
