This study focuses on the limitations of development and growthism, and examines the characteristics, values, and limitations of degrowth, which are noted as one of the alternative developments suitable for the era of climate change. The degrowth theory has received social attention since the 2000s, and has emerged as a social movement that aims to escape the limits of growthism and to improve the structure of capitalism. The value of degrowth can be found in escaping growth fetishism, pursuing the value of the global ecosystem, pursuing the authenticity of prosperity, and community management and solidarity. However, despite these values, degrowth theory lacks a vision of alternative development and faces epistemological limitations that simplify the working mechanisms of capitalism. In addition, the theory of degrowth shows limitations in practical aspects such as traditional regressionism, traps of localism, and lack of response to climate change and the ecological crisis. Despite various problems, degrowth theory is significant in that it pursues prosperity at the social and global level.
