This study aimed to identify the components of social comparison motives of college students in academic contexts and to develop and validate the scale. For this, an open-ended survey was administered to 55 college students attending two universities in Chungcheongbuk province ranging from first to fourth year, and data from 259 students in the preliminary study and 325 students in the main study were used for analysis. The results are as follows: First, from the preliminary survey analysis, six sub-factors and 30 items were extracted to measure college students’ social comparison motives in academic settings. Second, based on the exploratory factor analysis and expert(3 professors majoring in educational psychology and 2 doctoral students) content validity results, a total of 15 final items consisting of five sub-factors (common bond, self-evaluation, competitive spirit, self-enhancement, and modeling) were selected as the final items. Third, the final scale’s reliability(Cronbach’s Alpha) was good, with .80∼.88(.88 for common bond, .80 for self-evaluation, .84 for competitive spirit, .81 for self-enhancement, and .83 for modeling). As a result of the construct validity, SRMR, TLI, CFI, RMSEA were .073, .923, .941, .078 confirming that it was a suitable model. As a result of the criterion validity analysis, each factor of social comparison motives of college students in academic contexts was positively correlated at the level of .267~.424 with anxiety while studying. Self-esteem and subjective well-being were weakly correlated (r = .170, .167) with self-evaluation motives, but the correlations with the other factors were not statistically significant. The scale developed in this study is expected to provide a deeper understanding of the motivations behind college students’ comparisons in academic contexts and help guide counseling and educational approaches regarding which types of motives may be more adaptive in the social comparison process.
