To strengthen the sense of community among the people of South and North Korea, it is essential to explore commonalities. In this paper, we focused on ‘Dangun’ as a shared feature. In South and North Korea, Dangun is commonly regarded as the founder of the nation. Furthermore, in South and North Korea, where ideologies and systems are significantly different, it is fortunate that there is a common national holiday, National Foundation Day. However, the emphasis and representation of Dangun in South and North Korea may not necessarily talign. Therefore, in this paper, we examined South and North Korea's perceptions of Dangun, focusing on Dangun-related remains and literature, and examined their implications. Looking at the remains, it is evident that the historical narratives describing Dangun in the current textbooks of South and North Korea are most likely accurate, rather than Dangun being a fabricated story, that is, a myth. Looking at the literature, it can be seen that in South and North Korea, Dangun is generally regarded as the national ancestor, and that the central concept is Hongik Ingan, representing the consciousness of a common body. Although South and North Korea have different ideologies and systems, the importance of Dangun and his ideology lies in fostering national integration between the two countries and holds universal significance. This can contribute to strengthening the sense of community and promoting the idea of coexistence between South and North Korea. Thus, we are seeking further details and development tasks. To this end, follow-up research from various perspectives is needed.
