Prior studies examining the causes of stock price crash risk show the factors of means that managers influence the accounting opacity, such as managers’ earnings management, conservatism, and tax avoidance. However, in addition to these factors, it is also important to identify factors that can motivate managers to increase accounting opacity. Based on this research questions, this study shows that the optimistic forecasts of financial analysts about a firm act as pressure on the management performance, leading to a stock price crash risk.
The results are as follows. First, the optimistic forecasts of financial analysts increase the pressure on managers. Second, the pressure on the managers increases the stock price crash risk. Third, the pressure on the managers acts as a mediator between the optimistic forecasts of financial analysts and the stock price crash risk.
This study contributes to showing a mechanism that affects the stock price crash risk by analyzing mediating effect, which is rare in research fields on stock price crash risk. In particular, it reveals a path that the optimistic forecasts of financial analysts affect the psychology of managers and eventually lead to a stock price crash risk by using managerial pressure rather than accounting opacity, generally known as a direct factor that causes a stock price crash risk. We expect that future studies will show additional factors that can affect managerial pressure.
