This paper explores the theme of king(basileus) in the Gospel of John from the perspective of the history of ideas, comparing it with the case where Philo of Alexandria interprets Moses as a king by adopting Plato’s idea of king. The Gospel of John uses basileus only in a positive sense and recognizes Jesus, a historical figure who has never been a king in this world, as the only king (1:49; 12:13, 15; 18:36-37, 39; 19:3, 14, 15, 19, 21). Wayne A. Meeks (1967) observed that Philo also interprets Moses, a historical figure who was not a king, as a king (Mos. 2.66, 187). After searching for similar usages in other Jewish and Samaritan literature, he became convinced that the the oldest extant sources interpreting Moses as king were the works of Philo. Based on this, Mix raised the possibility that John’s concept of king was born in a culture where the king ideas of Philo and Plato were known and used. However, Mix did not introduce in detail the Plato’s concept of king used by Philo, but rather reduced it to the ‘philosopher-king’ motif. Moreover, pre vious studies after Mix did not show interest either in Philo or Plato. Therefore, this paper extracts the unit-ideas that Philo used to interpret Moses as a king using Plato, and discusses whether they resonated with the peculiar concept of king in John. For this this purpose, this paper classifies the unit-ideas forming Philo’s concept of king into seven types. Among these, six are unit-ideas in which Philo reinterprets Plato’s concept of king, and the remaining one is a king motif developed by Philo himself using Plato’s language. Since the Fourth Gospel has a strong tendency not to disclose the source of the information it used, it cannot be asserted that the Gospel actually used Philo or Plato. However, this paper proves that all seven unit-ideas that make up Philo’s concept of king are detected at a fairly high density in John.
