This essay investigates The Posthumous Works of Ma’kyunghun(『磨鏡軒集』) written by Ma’kyunghun Hong Gu-yon, who was a literatus of the early seventeenth-century Chosun. Since he did not pass the civil examination and become an official, and came to face premature death, his literature was not received and appreciated properly among the literati of his time. However, Taekdang Yi Sik, who was one of the Four Masters of Sino-Korean literature, wrote a critical essay on his works and shed light on them. As Yi mentioned, Hong’s poetry remains aloof from political success and takes on the untainted spirit of a recluse instead.
Hong accompanied his father with his older brother during his exile to the far south of Chosun. Without interacting with his peer group from the literati, he had to face even his own brother’s death in the meanwhile. He lost his brother and his sister-in-law one after the other and ended up taking care of the little baby niece. In the end, he himself came to pass away because of his own weakness acquired during his father’s exile. He did not have many friends and his success as a scholar-official had already been late.
Nevertheless, he was not immersed in the death of his family members and his own tragedy. He wrote poems usually in the form of old five-syllable-line poems, which was related with the literary research for the “Nineteen Old Poems”. He transcended the pragmatism and politics of the literature of scholar-officials and fashioned the universality of human life and death in the form of old five-syllable-poems, which are the most popular poetic style reminding of commoners’ voice. Finally, he accomplished the understanding of his own agony and tragedy as a universal poetic theme and the common fate of the mortals.
