This article examines the story of Ming founding official Seo-dal and his six daughters in Yukyeomgi, focusing on the problematic family narrative depicted in the work and its significance. The author of Yukyeomgi marries off the daughters to real historical figures from early Ming(明) and introduces the historical flow of the early Ming through an omnibus style narrative based on the daughters' actions. A distinctive feature of Yukyeomgi is the segmentation of the narrative and the fragmentation of family relationships. While the first six episodes show the harmonious interactions of the Seo-dal family, from the seventh episode onwards, the development of the Jingnan Campaign(靖難之變) and the resulting tragedies are detailed. Additionally, by severing the sisters' relationships and forming fragmented family connections, while still showing the remnants of family consciousness through specific family members, the work portrays a tragedy as if the family has disintegrated, yet does not abandon the family narrative structure.
The significance of the problematic family narrative in Yukyeomgi can be considered in relation to the understanding of the Jingnan Campaign, a prominent event in the work. The tragedy of three pairs of the six daughters dying or being deposed is closely linked to the development of the Jingnan Campaign. The work builds competitive relationships through structures like Yongilru and Myeongwolru even before the children's generation conflicts intensify, where the fragmentation of the family functions as a condition for the daughters to easily antagonize each other. Superficially depicting the harmony of the Seo-dal family, the daughters are set against each other, laying the groundwork for a tragic narrative. Yukyeomgi focuses on the perspectives of characters like the Mrs. Wang and Gwangyeom, who are removed from the chaos of the Jingnan Campaign, leading to a reconsideration of the children's generation's tragedies as part of the family narrative. Thus, Yukyeomgi uses the family narrative as a means to understand the historical flow of early Ming while recognizing the Jingnan Campaign as a destined tragedy and concretizing it in the work.
