This study examines the political meaning of the selection of the King’s son-in-law through the wedding of Princess Sukseon and Yeongmyengwi Hong Hyeonju (1793-1865). Princess Sukseon was the daughter of King Jeongjo and the Subin Park, and she and King Seonjo were the children of the same mother. Therefore, the wedding at this time was noteworthy in that it was the first royal ceremony performed after the direct administration of King Sunjo, along with the symbolism of Princess Sukseon.
The Pungsan Hong family, the family of Hong Hyeonju the son-in-law of the King, was a representative family of the late Joseon Dynasty, and was able to solidify the distinguished status by producing noblemen, a crown princess, and the King’s son-in-law. Afterwards, as Hong Manyong, Hong Seokbo, Hong Hyunbo, Hong Sanghan, and Hong Bonghan passed the civil service examination, the family continued the tradition of being government officials. Among them, Hong Hyeonju belonged to the line that continued from Hong Seokbo to Hong Sanghan.
The factors that led to Hong Hyeonju being selected as the King’s son-in-law were the political situation of the time as well as the family background. The highest-ranking members of the royal family, Queen Jeongsun, Queen Hyoui, Hyegyeonggung Hong, and Subin Park were alive, and maternal family centered around them was exercising influence. The relationship between the maternal families and Hong Hyeonju’s family appears to have been a major factor in Hong Hyeonju’s selection as the King’s son-in-law.
