Won -Buddhism, which has begun in the early 20th century on the Korean peninsula, defined the time as the era of “Great Opening of Matter” and proposed a prescription for “Great Opening of Spirit” as a solution. Today, however, the material development has given rise to new problems of climate change and ecological crisis, and some scientists have named the era of climate change as the Anthropocene. The Anthropocene has made mankind realize that there is Earth as the first condition for material development. It has made us realize that matter can only be developed up to the extent that the conditions of Earth can handle. Therefore, humans have to use matter within the limits of Earth. This is the task of “Great Opening of Spirit” in the Anthropocene. A philosophical response to these new challenges can be found in the theory of respond to things in East Asian philosophy. Sot’aesan, the founder of Wo n Buddhism, considered the thief who stole the matches as having “momentarily lost his reverence for the authority of the match.” Here we see that Sot’aesan does not see things in terms of capitalist “ownership” relationships, but rather focuses on human attitudes toward things. He recognizes that even objects like matches have “authority”.
To borrow Jane Bennett’s concept, a match has its own “power.” In this regard, Sotae-san’s philosophy at once succeeds the East Asian tradition of the theory of responding to things, and resonates with new materialism of contemporary Western philosophy. Finally, Sot’aesan believed that only when humans are freed from anthropocentrism can they restore their reverence for Heaven, Earth and myriad things, and transform the relationship between humans and all things from a “predatory relationship of the strong and the weak” to a “symbiotic relationship of mutual grace. This change of attitude might be the message of Wo n -Buddhism to mankind in the Anthropocene.
