This study investigates the influence of residents' sense of community on their intention to engage in urban regeneration initiatives, while also examining the moderating effects of political orientation. Utilizing survey data from urban regeneration projects in Korea, the research aims to discern how community cohesion fosters citizen involvement and enhances participatory urban planning processes aimed at addressing local challenges. The findings reveal several key insights. Firstly, factors such as age, attachment to the area, satisfaction with neighborhood relations, and progressive political orientation positively affect residents' willingness to address local issues actively. Secondly, age, education level, neighborhood attachment, satisfaction with neighborhood relations and residency, and progressive political orientation are positively associated with residents' inclination to participate in urban regeneration projects. Moreover, political orientation plays a moderating role, negatively affecting the relationship between neighborhood attachment and active participation in urban regeneration. Additionally, gender, age, education level, satisfaction with the neighborhood, and liberal political orientation are linked to residents' willingness to engage in public hearings, with political orientation positively moderating the relationship between neighborhood attachment and participation in public hearings. These findings underscore the significant impact of a sense of community and political orientation on residents' propensity to engage in community initiatives. The study emphasizes the importance of enhancing residents' sense of community and mitigating political polarization to foster greater participation in urban planning endeavors, including urban regeneration projects.
