The aim of this study is to explore interpersonal patterns of nonsuicidal self-injury(NSSI) using Structural Analysis of Social Behavior(SASB). Based on existing research indicating high comorbidity of borderline personality disorder with NSSI, the NSSI group was segmented into a general self-injury group and a borderline personality self-injury group. The study included 192 participants in their 20s, divided into a control group(n=109), a general self-injury group(n=51), and a borderline self-injury group(n=32). The participants completed the Deliberate Self-Harm Inventory, Personality Assessment Inventory-Borderline Features Scale, and SASB Intrex short form through an online survey. The findings are as follows. Firstly, the general self-injury group perceived that others loved them but caring little and neglecting. They showed internal behavior of attacking and blaming themselves. Secondly, the borderline personality self-injury group perceived the significant others as more hostile and neglectful compared to the general self-injury group. They also showed a hateful and withdrawn attitude toward the others. In terms of introjection, they exhibited self-directed hostility similar to the general self-injury group but acted unruly and did not take care of themselves. These results show that although the self-injury symptoms of the two groups are similar, their underlying interpersonal dynamics differ significantly. The implications of the research for the understanding and counseling individuals with NSSI were suggested.
