This study aimed to explore the differences in psychological and environmental career barriers and career decision levels based on major satisfaction among counseling major students and to verify the mediating effect of career decision self-efficacy on the relationship between these career barriers and career decision levels. The subjects of the study were 257 students majoring in counseling-related at four-year universities. The collected data were analyzed using PROCESS Macro and SPSS 26.0. The main findings of the study are as follows: First, students were divided into two groups based on their relative levels of major satisfaction—high (top 40%) and low (bottom 40%)—and significant differences were found between the groups in psychological career barriers, environmental career barriers, career decision levels, and career decision self-efficacy. However, there was no significant difference between the groups in the subfactor of psychological career barriers related to employment conditions. Second, psychological career barriers negatively impacted career decision levels in both high and low major satisfaction groups. Third, in the high major satisfaction group, career decision self-efficacy partially mediated the effect of psychological career barriers on career decision levels. Based on these findings, implications for career development and counselor education for counseling major students were discussed.
